John Coleman: Accrington heading in the right direction

Accrington boss John Coleman believes Oxford are the best team his side have played this season and feels a 2-2 draw is a step in the right direction for Stanley.

The Us extended their unbeaten run to six games with the point as they eye a play-off place.

They were in control in the first half and former Stanley loan player Tariqe Fosu gave Oxford a deserved 28th-minute lead with a solo effort from the edge of the area.

Jordan Clark equalised after 59 minutes heading into an empty net after goalkeeper Simon Eastwood lost his challenge for the ball with Ross Sykes.

Cameron Brannagan rifled home a 30-yard superb goal after 70 minutes to put Oxford back in front before Stanley sub Offrande Zanzala fired home the leveller three minutes later.

Accrington have won just two league games this season but are looking upwards.

“They are the best team we have played this season, they play good football, they pass the ball around well and they were better than us in the first half,” said Coleman.

“We looked hesitant, we didn’t get to grips with the way they played.

“In the second half, we were a different animal, I am really proud of the players and they should be proud of themselves. We were magnificent.

“We have scored two good goals, hit the woodwork twice and their keeper has pulled off a worldy at the end from Joe Pritchard. I think on the chances created we shaded it but to come back the way we did against a very good team shows we are heading in the right direction.”

Oxford boss Karl Robinson admitted his in-form side were not at the races but he was happy with a point by the end.

“I cannot fault my players’ attitude and effort. I don’t think any one of my players played well even though we scored two really good goals.

“There were some good aspects of the game and we know we have quality in the team and some very talented individuals but we weren’t at the races today.

“But I am proud of the way we came away with a point. Last season we would have lost this game but we are here to fight as a team.

“You can see there is a steeliness about us and we are in it together.

“We have a very young midfield, the average age is 22, and they are learning all the time. Their first goal was a goalkeeper error and we have suffered two early injuries but, through 46 games of the season, different things will be thrown at you to deal with and you have to get on with it.”
