Dani Alves is used to locking horns with some of the most fearsome attackers in world football, but on Saturday he was forced to tackle a more prickly opponent.

In Sao Paulo’s clash with fellow Brazilian side Fortaleza, the Barcelona legend was swarmed by wasps as he tried to take a corner at the Pacaembu Stadium.

Ironically, the unwelcome incident really took the sting out of proceedings, as the referee called a five-minute halt to deal with the problem.

Alves lined up to take a corner in the 25th minute and quickly grabbed his neck after seemingly being stung.

Other players checked his neck to see where the wasps had made their mark, before Fortaleza defender Jackson de Souza took matters into his own hands.

With the swarm perched on top of the corner flag, De Souza covered his face with his shirt and pulled it out of the ground.

Thankfully, Alves didn’t have a bee in his bonnet for too long, managing to see the funny side on Instagram after the dangerous episode.

On a picture that shows him holding his neck, the 36-year-old wrote: “Not even the bees can put up with us, brother.”

Alves returned to his home country in the summer having been released by Paris St-Germain at the end of June.

He is currently the captain of Brazil, replacing Neymar as skipper back in May ahead of the Copa America.

And the right-back led his country to glory, seeing off Peru in the final to clinch their ninth win in the competition.

In seven years at Barcelona, Alves made 391 appearances and picked up six La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys and three Champions League crowns.

He then went onto clinch the Italian title with Juventus, while also finishing as a runner-up in the 2016/17 Champions League final.

And after triumphing twice in Ligue 1 with PSG Alves decided it was time to go home to Brazil.
