Sampson out to build on vital win

Mark Sampson praised Stevenage for taking the “opportunity” of a League Two basement battle but warned there must be no let-up in their performances.

Scott Cuthbert’s first goal for a year earned a tense 1-0 win against Morecambe in the battle of the EFL’s bottom two.

It gave Stevenage an invaluable three points but manager Sampson knows their battle for a positive season is only just beginning.

“It was a huge win for us,” he said. “Everyone knew coming into the game how big it was.

“We all knew the importance of it but we tried all week to see it as an opportunity rather than a threat.

“We stayed positive, the lads really produced when it mattered and hopefully that will give us the platform to move forward.

“The way we are playing is full credit to the lads. We need to make sure the performances stay just as high as they are at the moment.

“The points will come if we keep performing at the same level that we are now. It’s three wins in the last (five), so we are moving in the right direction but the hard work has to continue.

“We can’t rest on our laurels because our form has picked up. We need to keep working hard to make sure the points and the results keep on coming for us.”

Scottish defender Cuthbert headed home from Charlie Carter’s corner with eight minutes to go to secure Stevenage’s second league win of the season.

Shaun Miller had earlier forced a smart save from Sacha Bastien as Morecambe bid for an early lead, but were left frustrated later in the contest.

Cole Stockton had a goal disallowed for offside while Cuthbert’s header came when the Shrimps defended a corner with 10 men.

“Those were big decisions and probably summed up our season again in many ways,” said Morecambe boss Jim Bentley.

“Cole’s produced a great strike to score but Shaun Miller was ruled offside for being in the line of the keeper when you see goals given like that week in, week out.

“It was a big blow to lose Luke Conlan for the corner as he was one of our defensive markers and we missed him in there.

“It was a typical bottom-of-the-table game and was quite scrappy.

“The first goal was always going to be vital and once they got it, it was always going to be difficult.

“We need to try and get a result to turn things around. Just one result can get you on a run and get you out of trouble. We know that.

“We all know how important that win will be. We’re striving to get on a run.”
