Unai Emery has hinted that Mesut Ozil could be handed the captain's armband against Liverpool tomorrow night in the Carabao Cup.

It comes after Granit Xhaka's outburst at the weekend that has had many Arsenal fans questioning* his commitment to the team.

The Gunners threw away a 2-0 lead against Crystal Palace to draw with the Eagles at the Emirates.

When Xhaka was called off on the hour mark with the scores tied, fans applauded Emery's decision sarcastically but as the Swiss international trudged off the pitch slowly the home crowd grew more annoyed.

Arsenal ace Granit Xhaka left fans raging on Sunday

Boos began to ring around the Emirates, triggering Xhaka to wave his arms up at the fans, cup his ears to the stands and appear to tell them to 'f*** off'.

As the Arsenal captain finally left the pitch, he slapped Emery's handshake away and yanked his shirt off.

The Gunners face Liverpool tomorrow night in the Carabao Cup at Anfield and a number of players will not be taking part, including Xhaka.

And Emery has hinted that ostracised star Ozil could take up the captain's armband in his absence.

The Spaniard: "That conversation this morning was because I wanted to listen about how he was thinking now to help us tomorrow.

"It was a very good conversation. Tomorrow he is in the group.

"We need his quality, his skill. We need his consistency. We need his positive mentality. Then we need him to help us on the pitch.

"I want now like in the pre-season, like a month ago, for him to help us on the pitch."

When pressed on whether the German could be skipper, Emery replied: "It depends. He could be yes."
