Grayson wants more despite Blackpool’s emphatic FA Cup victory

Blackpool manager Simon Grayson insists his side must do better despite their 4-1 win against Morecambe to progress into the FA Cup second round.

Armand Gnanduillet, Nathan Delfouneso, Matty Virtue and Sullay Kaikai all scored for the hosts to crush the Shrimps’ hopes and ensure Grayson’s side were the ones with their name in the round two draw.

But the Blackpool boss, whose players also beat Wolves Under-21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night, believes his team could have easily been punished on another day by a more clinical opponent.

“We want to be creative and expansive but we just allowed Morecambe to hit us on the counter-attack and another team might have punished us,” he said.

“In the last two games, the opposition have hit the woodwork five times in total – we’ve got to make sure we’re not gifting opportunities as easily as we were.

“It was frustrating we conceded a needless goal on half-time, which would have given Morecambe a lift, but we were professional second half.

“In any game, if you can get the first goal it gives you belief and confidence and something to make sure you build off it and that’s what we did – I just felt first half we threw too many bodies forward.

“I thought it was a decent game – Morecambe played well and we knew we had to be right, with the right attitude and make sure we played with a purpose and intensity.

“It was a tricky week – we had two potential big banana skins but we’ve come through it with flying colours.

“We’re through to the next round, and that’s all we wanted when we started the game.”

Grayson’s side got off to a fast start after going 2-0 up in the space of just 24 minutes, going into the break 3-1 up and extending their lead in the second period courtesy of Kaikai’s neat finish.

Morecambe rallied admirably throughout, however, twice hitting the woodwork to give their League One opponents a scare.

And Morecambe joint-caretaker manager Barry Roche says there was little in the contest despite his team’s 4-1 defeat.

“Overall the performance wasn’t a bad one but goals change games and we conceded poor goals, which killed us really,” he said.

“When they went 3-0 up, I think that scoreline very much flattered them – we hit the crossbar at 1-0 and if that goes in then it’s a completely different game.

“It might sound stupid, but apart from the goals, there wasn’t an awful lot in the game.

“We’re bitterly disappointed at the result – we didn’t reach the standards we set last week.

“The problem is, when you make mistakes against teams as good as Blackpool, they will punish you.”
