Pitman nets stoppage-time winner as Portsmouth end Altrincham run

Brett Pitman broke Altrincham hearts with a stoppage-time winner as Portsmouth snatched a 2-1 victory after a brilliant and spirited performance from the National League North outfit.
Substitute Pitman was left unmarked to head home at the far post after Marcus Harness’ corner was flicked on as the veteran striker spared Pompey’s blushes in the FA Cup second-round encounter at Fratton Park.
Josh Hancock looked to have given the visitors a deserved replay in a match they dominated for long periods when he converted from the penalty spot with only eight minutes remaining.
Christian Burgess brought down Jordan Hulme and Hancock stepped up confidently to stroke the spot-kick low and out of the reach of Craig MacGillivray.
Pompey had taken the lead in the 56th minute when Ben Close scored a trademark volley – lashing home right-footed from 15 yards into the top corner.
The visitors had a very strong penalty shout after 11 minutes as Oli Hawkins appeared to trip Hulme but the referee waved away the appeals.
Portsmouth striker Ellis Harrison hit the post after 25 minutes and Hulme did the same for Altrincham when Ronan Curtis inexplicably gave the ball away twice in quick succession just before half-time.
