West Ham United Goalkeeper David Martin In Tears After Clean Sheet Vs Chelsea

David Martin collapsed to the turf in tears after keeping a clean sheet for boyhood team West Ham United against Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

Martin made his first ever Premier League start for his boyhood side and helped them to a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

The 33-year-old has waited over 15 years for his top flight debut and you could see how much it meant to him at full-time.

'England's number one' echoed around the West Ham end as a new cult hero was established in East London.

Martin has endured a journeyman career throughout the lower tiers of English football.

He started his career at Wimbledon in 2004 just before their reformation as MK Dons.

2006 saw a move to Liverpool and the then 20-year-old looked destined for the top.

But a string of loan spells in the lower leagues followed before being sold back to MK Dons in 2010.

Martin spent seven years with Dons, helping them with promotion from League 1 to the Championship in 2015.

He left after seven years and joined Milwall, West Ham's bitter rivals.

His role at Milwall was also as backup, making only 11 appearances for the Championship outfit last season.

Martin then joined his boyhood club this summer expecting to be third choice keeper.

Manuel Pellegrini's side already had Łukasz Fabiański as established number one and Roberto ahead of him as second choice in the pecking order.

But a long term injury to Fabiański in addition to Roberto not adapting to the Premier League saw Martin thrown in against Chelsea today.

He celebrated following the game with his father, Alvin Martin.

The keeper told Match of the Day following the victory,

"My dad didn't say much - I think we were both in tears! For my dad to play for the club for 21 years and see it, and for me to make my debut, keep clean sheet and get win for the boys, it is so pleasing."

Martin Sr is a certified legend among the London Stadium faithful after a glittering 20 year career with West Ham.

He played in the heart of defence and helped West Ham to FA Cup glory in 1980.

Although it's unlikely his son will repeat those heroics, he's managed to carve out his own piece of West Ham history.
