Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson praises Ivan Toney after Bolton win

Ivan Toney is “on fire” according to his manager Darren Ferguson after the Peterborough striker struck in a 1-0 home win against rock bottom Bolton Wanderers.

League One’s top scorer headed in his 14th league goal of the season as Posh closed the gap on second place Ipswich.

And Ferguson was delighted to see his side make it nine unbeaten at home.

“We couldn’t get that second goal which gave them the confidence to get something out the game,” he said.

“But I was really pleased with the players, the way they went about the game, their mentality, their character. It was very, very good.

“Luke Murphy arrived late in the box and nearly scored (for Bolton), but generally I was very pleased with the performance. I thought we were pretty much in control of the game, and if we’d got a second I think it could have been a lot more, but we just didn’t manage to do that.

“It always going to be a tricky game. They’ve got some really good players in their team.

“We’re finding ways of winning at the moment and that’s what it’s all about. And it’s another clean sheet.

“Ivan’s goal – it’s almost in slow motion. He’s angled his header and it’s a great finish. He’s on fire at the moment, absolutely on fire.”

Toney struck after 23 minutes when he headed in Louis Reed’s superb first-time cross back across goal and into the far post from eight yards out.

Posh should have extended their lead, but after Toney blocked a clearance from goalkeeper Remi Matthews strike partner Mo Eisa twice had shots blocked.

Eisa later had a shot cleared the line before hitting the underside of the bar from two yards out, while in the second-half Toney had a goalbound shot blocked by Josh Earl before Luke Murphy squandered the visitors’ best chance by heading wide inside the area.

Bolton assistant manager David Flitcroft said: “There were some positives to build on.

“First half, the goal, the cross coming in – they’ve got to do better. It’s come in, it’s almost a free header.

“You can’t let the players of Peterborough’s quality have that time in the box because they hurt you – and they did.

“Second half, there was a real response. We went at them, downhill with the wind, went for the throat and caused them some more problems. But we didn’t finish them off in those moments.

“Luke’s chance is the chance we were waiting for.

“Sometimes you have to ride your luck and wait for that one opportunity. It’s presented itself to Luke but he’s not finished it. We’ve got to make sure we improve, and everyone at the football club is working towards that.”
