Southend boss Sol Campbell: A month ago we would probably have lost that game

Southend boss Sol Campbell took positives from his side’s battling performance despite them letting a lead slip in the 2-2 draw with Rotherham at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers remain second bottom in League One, 10 points from safety, as Campbell’s wait for a league win goes on.

But the former England captain, who was appointed manager in October, felt it was a good point for his team.

“The performance was really good and the lads played really well against a dangerous Rotherham side who are doing well,” said Campbell.

“Considering where we are and where Rotherham are it’s a good point but we also had a lot of chances to come away with a win.

“We need more belief going forward and thinking we can score.

“We also need to be sharper in the box but that will come the more we train and I thought the lads really did show character.

“We need to iron out some mistakes still but maybe a month or so ago this was a game we would probably have lost.”

Rotherham’s point saw them move back up to the sixth, the final play-off place, and it came courtesy of a second-half equaliser from former Southend striker Freddie Ladapo.

Goals from Jason Demetriou and Sam Mantom had seen the Shrimpers cancel out an own goal from Rob Kiernan to take the lead.

But Ladapo’s effort on the hour mark meant the game ended all square.

Millers boss Paul Warne was pleased his team did not return home empty handed.

“I thought we showed good character to come back from being 2-1 down and to take a point,” said Warne.

“We wouldn’t have taken a point before the game, we wanted to come here and take all three.

“On another day we could have nicked it at the end as we really took the game to them.

“Overall, a draw might please them more than me but we’re back in the play-offs now and it’s good.

“We should have won to be honest but at 2-1 down better teams than us would collapse.”
