Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has received some strong criticism in the last few days.

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial does not show the work rate required to play for the Red Devils, claims former Aston Villa striker Tony Cascarino. Martial has been a regular in the United side this season when he has been free of injury. The Frenchman has often been utilised as the central striker following the summer sale of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan.

The 24-year-old has scored six goals in all competitions this season, with just four in the Premier League.

Cascarino does not doubt Martial’s talent but has questioned his effort and desire for the cause.

And the former Republic of Ireland international reckons Martial may be better off used as a super-sub in the future.

“I speak a lot about work-rate in this column and another player who sparks debate is Anthony Martial,” Cascarino wrote in The Times.

"He plays on his terms and that’s not good enough for Manchester United.

“He’s so talented but if he tries a flick and it doesn’t come off he sulks and slumps – compare that to young Daniel James, who isn’t as technically good but works so much harder for the team.

“Martial’s not a centre forward and I’m not sure he works hard enough to play out wide so I don’t see what future he has – maybe impact sub?

“He got a new contract based on his value in the transfer market and that is dangerous, it sends out the wrong message to the players and means the manager may feel obliged to pick him.”

Meanwhile, legendary United winger Ryan Giggs has also criticised Martial following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to Everton

"He is talented, and he's not a bad kid, but the problem he has is that he looks lethargic all the time,” Giggs told Premier League Productions.

“He looks casual, as if he's not bothered.

"When it comes off, and he's doing brilliant things, you say it just comes naturally.

"But when it's not, you think: he's not running, he's not trying, he's not working hard enough, he's not holding the ball up.

"So in my eyes he has to try extra hard because of his persona, because of the way that he moves.

"But he doesn't look like he breaks sweat and when United are chasing a game you want someone to get across the front post.

“You might not score, but your team-mate might score."
