Jose Mourinho would like Christian Eriksen to stay at Tottenham and ignore interest from Manchester United.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho wants Christian Eriksen to sign a new contract, amid interest from Manchester United. Eriksen’s deal expires in June and he looks set to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season as he has knocked back several contract offers from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who also wants to keep him at the club.

The attacking midfielder expressed his desire to leave the north Londoners last summer and even though a move never materialised he appears like he hasn’t changed his mind and could start negotiating with foreign clubs come the New Year.

United are said to be keeping tabs on the Denmark international and could agree a fee with Tottenham during the January transfer window as Levy admitted he is open to selling him to Premier League opponents.

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have also been linked with a departure from north London but the latter ultimately signed a new three-year extension on Friday.

Mourinho has urged Vertonghen and Eriksen to follow Alderweireld’s example and commit their futures at Tottenham.

The Tottenham boss said: "Toby's statement for me was beautiful, simple: "I couldn't be happier in another place".

"In football now there are some people that it looks like they are sometimes more important than players and the clubs, and these people are very important sometimes in decisions, in solutions.

"In this case the family and the agents were happy to make the player happy. So it was easy.

"Do I want Vertonghen to sign as well? Yes. Can I say more? No.

“I think a player will sign a contract when the club wants, when the player wants, when the family wants, when the agent wants.

“If one of these parts doesn't want it is very difficult to make it happen unless the player changes agent and gets an agent who also wants.

"But again, the most important thing is what Toby told: 'I couldn't be happier in another place". Amazing!

"Do I want Eriksen to sign as well? The only thing I will tell you about Christian is that I would like him to sign a new contract.

“Apart from that I'm not going to tell you anything."

Eriksen has been prolific at Tottenham ever since his ï¿¡11.5million move from Ajax in 2013.

The 27-year-old has made a total of 296 appearances and produced 68 goals as well as 89 assists.
