Official: AS Monaco appoint Robert Moreno as head coach

Robert Moreno has been confirmed as the new head coach of AS Monaco until 2022, replacing Leonardo Jardim whose dismissal was announced at the same time as the Spaniard's appointment.

Jardim won the 2016/17 Ligue 1 title with the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Bernardo Silva in his team and began his second stint at the Stade Louis II in January 2019.

Not even a 5-1 win over Lille in their last match before Christmas could change the mind of the Monaco board, with Jardim dismissed before the squad's return to training on December 29.

Moreno, who was relieved of his duties as Spain coach in November, turned out to be the top pick for owner Dmitry Rybolovlev, despite interest in former Valencia boss Marcelino.

"AS Monaco announces the end of its collaboration with coach Leonardo Jardim," read a tweet from the club's official Twitter channel.

"Former Spain national team coach Robert Moreno takes over first-team duties in an agreement that runs until 2022," it continued.

After receiving various offers, including one from Real Betis when Rubi's position was precarious, Monaco become Moreno's first challenge as a coach at club level.
