Anthony Limbrick pleased to hand over to Ian Holloway on winning note

Anthony Limbrick was pleased to hand over the reins to new Grimsby manager Ian Holloway on a winning note.

Appointed by the League Two club on Tuesday, the former QPR and Blackpool boss watched on from the stands as substitute Ahkeem Rose settled the game against Salford.

It was a strike that earned Grimsby their first win in all competitions since late September.

Limbrick, who will act as assistant to Holloway, said: “It was nice to get that victory. It wasn’t about me. It was about the fans, the players and everyone associated with the club.

“The place was rocking and it was a good atmosphere with the announcement of the new gaffer coming in.

“We were just pleased to get that win for the players and the staff. They have worked ever so hard since I’ve been in interim charge these last few weeks.

“For us to get one over the line, and so late on as well, was pleasing.

“We got a little bit lucky. Macca (James McKeown) also made a good save towards the end before we scored.

“We did get a bit of luck and sometimes you need that.”

Salford manager Graham Alexander said: “It was a game that we could have won. We had some good opportunities before they scored.

“The goal they scored was scruffy and untidy from our perspective. It was a scruffy game and it was always going to be an ugly win for whoever got it.

“I don’t think we did the ugly things well enough for our quality to count. You can’t just rely on that.

“We needed to put more pressure on the opposition, especially in the final third. We had some good opportunities, but not enough.

“When you do that, you are susceptible to conceding a goal, which we did.

“It’s really disappointing after some really good strides in the last few games. It’s a step back in the wrong direction and we have to make sure we put that right.

“We need to go forward again. I thought there was a lack of putting the opportunity.”

Genuine opportunities were few and far between during the first half – with Adam Rooney dragging wide before seeing a free header saved.

At the other end, midfielder Jake Hessenthaler struck a venomous drive over the crossbar, following muted claims for a Grimsby penalty.

Upon the restart, Charles Vernam cut inside on two occasions and fired goalwards.

The in-form Brandon Asante-Thomas was proving to be a handful for Salford, meanwhile, and it took a superb block from Harry Davis to prevent him from opening the scoring.

Asante-Thomas was then promptly denied by James McKeown, but it was Rose who produced the match-winning moment.
