Tottenham have confirmed Harry Kane will not return until April after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury,

Tottenham striker Harry Kane will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring which will keep the England captain out of action until April. It means Jose Mourinho will be without his talisman as Spurs chase a top four place.

Kane has been in fine form for Tottenham this season, netting 17 goals in all competitions.

And it leaves Mourinho with some serious thinking to do as to whether he signs a striker in the remainder of the January transfer window.

Other potential options to play as the main striker currently at the club are few and far between with Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura the main candidates.

Spurs confirmed the extent of Kane's injury on Thursday afternoon.

A statement on their website read: “Following ongoing assessment by our medical staff over the past week, we can confirm that Harry Kane will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring.

"The striker suffered the injury during our Premier League fixture against Southampton last week and specialists have advised surgery after further review of the injury.

"The decision to undergo surgery is not expected to impact the timeframe that the England captain will be sidelined, with the expectation that he will return to training in April.”

Tottenham boss Mourinho believes Kane is irreplaceable in the current squad at his disposal.

Following the injury he said: “We have what we have. That's the squad that started preseason, that's the squad we have for the season.

"Again everybody knows again the importance of Harry in the squad. I think irreplaceable, if you think about one player by one player, I think he's irreplaceable. But we have to try solutions with the players we have.”

But when asked if Tottenham would look at bringing in a new striker in the face of Kane’s hamstring injury, Mourinho was coy.

He explained: “Again, I come to work with the players that are available and I'm not thinking about the market.

"I think my job is to do what I did today, what I'm going to do tomorrow, which is to work with a small group of players.

"The players playing are permanently recovering but recovering is not enough. If you look at the number of injuries to Premier League players in the past two weeks, you realise recovering is not enough.

"The most protected players belong to the squads with so many solutions that there is space for rotation. I don't want to think about it.

"Of course the market is open until the end of January. Everybody in the club wants to give the teams the best conditions but at the same time the world doesn't end at the end of this season.

"We have a few months until the end of the season to fight for results obviously but nothing ends at the end of the season. The end of the season is just the end of a first period.”

Tottenham return to action against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Saturday (5.30pm).
