Morecambe boss Derek Adams delighted to secure much-needed League Two win

Morecambe boss Derek Adams was a happy man after seeing his side pick up a vital three points with a 2-1 victory over Port Vale.

Two early goals helped give the Shrimps to their fifth win of the season much to the delight of Adams.

Morecambe enjoyed a fast start as they went a goal ahead after only six minutes.

Adam Phillips swung in a left-wing corner which was met by central defender Steven Old, who headed home his third goal of the season when he got ahead of his marker to score from six yards.

The Shrimps then doubled their lead six minutes later from a swift counter attack. Carlos Mendes-Gomes fed Phillips down the right and he produced a firmly-struck low cross that fell perfectly for the unmarked Cole Stockton to slide home from close range.

Morecambe started the second half well with George Tanner forcing Scott Brown into a neat save before Askey’s side came back strongly in the final 30 minutes.

They were rewarded for their efforts in the 71st minute when right-back James Gibbons curled a delightful left-foot effort over Morecambe goalkeeper Mark Halstead from 12 yards.

Halstead produced a stunning save to deny an equaliser for the Valiants with 12 minutes remaining when he got down low to his right to save from David Amoo’s close-range header.

Adams said: “It was a very good win for us and a vital three points that allowed us to open up a bit of a gap between ourselves and Stevenage.

“We started the game well with two early goals and gained in confidence from then and carried on the good performance we gave on Saturday.

“We passed the ball really well in the first half in difficult conditions and it was great that we got the first goal of the game, which is something we haven’t done enough this season.

“They came back into it in the second half and when they scored with 19 minutes to go there were a few nerves. But we stayed resolute and I was really pleased that we held on for the points.”

Port Vale boss John Askey said his side were always going to find it difficult to get anything from the game after conceding two goals in the first 12 minutes.

He said: “It was our first defeat in seven games and it was a blip but although we huffed and puffed, we didn’t have enough tonight.

“To be two down so early in the game makes it a tough task no matter who you are playing against.

“We had a bit of misfortune with their first goal that came off Luke Joyce and that is the sort of thing that can happen in conditions like this, but the second goal was disappointing and we found it hard after that.

“It’s disappointing that every time we seem to be getting ourselves into a position to challenge the top sides we seem to shoot ourselves in the foot and we were found wanting a little bit a times and hopefully the lads will respond at the weekend.”
