Perry Ng effort enough as Crewe edge Cheltenham to go third in League Two

Crewe moved back up to third in Sky Bet League Two after Perry Ng’s second-half blast secured a 1-0 win over promotion rivals Cheltenham.

Skipper Ng fired into the bottom corner to confirm the Railwaymen’s second-half superiority as the Robins were left to rue first-half misses.

Alfie May lifted an attempted lob into the arms of Will Jaaskelainen after being put clear by Chris Hussey early on.

And Cheltenham wasted a gilt-edged chance to take a first-half lead when a slip-up by Nicky Hunt left May to charge clear again.

The striker squared for what should have been a simple finish for Alex Addai, only for his partner to haplessly miscue in front of an empty net.

Crewe went close when Paul Green’s close-range header was deflected onto the roof of the net after the midfielder latched onto Chuma Anene’s flick-on.

An even first half saw Crewe go close when Daniel Powell fire into the side netting and Tommy Lowery’s drive – bound for the far corner – was turned around by Cheltenham goalkeeper Owen Evans.

After the restart Evans pushed out a low drive from Powell and caught Lowery’s snapshot which flew off the turf as Crewe upped the tempo. And they took the lead when Ng let rip from 25 yards in the 69th minute.

Substitute Tahvon Campbell curled a late effort over the top for Cheltenham whose four-game unbeaten run came to an end.
