Bruno Fernandes has told Sporting Lisbon he is ‘desperate’ to complete a transfer to Manchester United, it has been claimed.

Starsport understands Old Trafford chiefs are at loggerheads with their Portuguese counterparts over the signing of Fernandes after refusing the meet the asking price of €80m.

A €50m has been lodged for the 25-year-old but talks have stalled because of the vast gulf in the two clubs’ valuation.

According to Sky Sports, United and Sporting are set to continue talks next week after Fernandes' message to club chiefs.

Fernandes appeared emotional after Friday’s 2-0 defeat to Benfica which suggested he has played his final game for the club.

Speaking after Sporting’s loss to their Lisbon rivals, head coach Silas said: “He's a player who wants to play in a league superior to ours. What player wouldn't want to play in the English league? It's hard to tell him: ‘Don't go’.

“Bruno deserves to play in those kind of leagues and the best is that one. If he is one of the best he has to be there.”

United have been tracking Fernandes for the best part of 12 months.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is looking for midfield reinforcements, travelled to Portugal earlier this month to run the rule over Fernandes in person and returned to tell Ed Woodward he wanted him in his squad.

United manager Solskjaer was tight-lipped when asked about the transfer plot ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.

"I've got no transfer updates, so no," he said.

"If we get something that we can tell you about we will, but I've got no news now.

“I can’t tell you about any players that play for other teams, no. We’re focusing on this team at the moment.”

Sporting are in action on Tuesday against Braga in the Taca da Liga. It is unknown if Fernandes will play in the cup clash.
