Tottenham are working around the clock on a permanent deal that would see Gareth Bale return to the club from Real Madrid before this week's transfer deadline.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is keen to sign at least three players before the transfer window closes with Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes the only new arrival so far this month. But a deal for the Welsh superstar, 30, will be challenging to complete with his £650,000 a week contract which runs until June 2022 one of the biggest obstacles.

A loan deal for Bale who Real have been trying to offload for the last 12 months has been ruled out, but the two clubs are discussing a permanent switch.

Bale has been limited to just 15 games this season because of hamstring and calf problems and then suffered an ankle knock in the Copa del Rey last week.

Mourinho is keen to strengthen his attacking options with Harry Kane set to miss the rest of the season, and chairman Daniel Levy will be haggling hard for the best possible deal.

His other options include Borussia Dortmund duo Spanish international Paco Alacer and Germany star Mario Gotze but re-uniting with Bale remains his first choice.

Tottenham and Manchester United have been linked with a move for Bale, with former Spurs ace Dimitar Berbatov urging the Wales international to consider a return to the Premier League.

He said: “Gareth Bale managed to get on the score sheet in midweek for Real Madrid, but it was sad to see him come off injured, you want to see players like that play all the time.

"But then, I'm surprised that when you play at this high level, for Real Madrid, and you have so many injuries throughout your career and you can't seem to get rid of them - what is going on?

"I’m sure Real Madrid have a great medical department, but the player needs to know their body and if needs be they should train a different way.

"To see those injuries keep coming up, something isn't right. I'm sure Bale is frustrated as well because as a player you don't want to miss games or training, even if you play badly.

"I love watching Bale when he plays, I want him to stay fit and healthy, if he wants to stay at Real Madrid I'd like him to stay.

"But if he wants to go, I'd like to see him go back to Spurs or go to Man United. In the end it's all down to him, obviously he likes it there.”

With Bale on Spurs’ list of potential incoming signings, the north London club are aware they could lose Christian Eriksen before the transfer deadline.

The Denmark international is expected to join Inter Milan before next Friday.

Spurs will pocket around £17m for the 27-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer.
