Campbell hails ‘heroic performances’ as Southend finally secure home league win

Southend manager Sol Campbell praised his young guns after guiding the Shrimpers to a 2-1 home win against Lincoln.

The victory was Southend’s first at Roots Hall in the league since the final game of last season.

And Campbell – who lost eight players in the transfer window without bringing any in – was thrilled to see his youthful side triumph as Elvis Bwomono headed home a dramatic injury-time winner.

“It’s a fantastic result with the situation we’ve had this week and where we are now as well,” said Campbell.

“You start off the day with several youngsters and academy guys and you’re just hoping they gel together and give a good account of themselves, which they did.

“They stuck to the plan and played some really good football.

“Elvis had a fantastic game and there were a lot of heroic performances out there but we have to keep it going.”

Southend remain second from bottom in the League One standings, 12 points from safety.

But the Shrimpers’ spirits were significantly lifted by securing just their third league win of the season.

After a quiet start to the game, Southend went in front in the 63rd minute when Charlie Kelman netted the rebound after Harry Phillips had struck the crossbar from 20 yards.

Lincoln came forward in search of an equaliser, with ex-Shrimpers striker Tom Hopper seeing a low shot blocked by the legs of Southend goalkeeper Mark Oxley and Tyreece John-Jules firing over from close range.

But, just a minute from time, the Imps drew level when Harry Anderson headed into the back of the net after Cian Bolger had nodded Jorge Grant’s
corner into his path.

Lincoln came close to taking the lead when Jake Hesketh’s deflected 20-yard shot was pushed over the crossbar by Oxley, before Josh Vickers rushed out to deny Tom Clifford at the other end of the field.

However, Southend secured the win six minutes into stoppage time when Bwomono bagged the first league goal of his career, heading home a corner from Stephen McLaughlin.

And that left Imps boss Michael Appleton fuming at the final whistle.

“We were really poor for the first 75 minutes,” said Appleton.

“We only turned up for the last 15 minutes.

“You can’t expect to pick up points if we do that.

“We lacked a clinical edge and our quality let us down in the final third.

“We got done at a corner for their winner and the players who were at fault for their winner have held their hands up but you can’t keep doing that.

“The first goal could have been avoided too.

“We got what we deserved. It would have been nice to have got the point but it would have papered over the cracks.”
