Curle delighted with training ground work after win at Macclesfield

Keith Curle was delighted the extra work on the training ground paid off for his Northampton team as their set-piece practice earned a 1-0 win at Macclesfield.

A dire game for the spectators was settled by Callum Morton’s goal just before the hour mark, and the Cobblers boss paid tribute to his players’ dedication to set-piece training.

“Set pieces are something that as a player you don’t like doing because it’s the extra 45 minutes or the extra hour after training on a Thursday or a Friday when you’ve done the shape,” he said following a victory that kept Northampton firmly in the play-off picture.

“We are meticulous and regimented on what we do. The new lads have come in and absorbed the information really quickly, they all know their roles and their responsibilities and that showed today.”

Macclesfield were undone when Nicky Adams’ corner was nodded by Charlie Goode and Morton pounced to thump in on his first start since joining on loan from West Brom.

But Curle said it was a game won as much through hard work and determination, adding: “This is a difficult place to come, not only with the conditions but the mentality of our group had to be right in the build-up.

“We’ve got some good characters and when you have that mindset you can take that game plan anywhere.

“We had to tough it out, we knew on a bobbly pitch both teams were trying to commit people forward and you have to give Macclesfield credit as well, they stood up and competed very well as you would expect from a team where Mark Kennedy is in charge.”

Kennedy, the hosts’ head coach, was also pleased by his side’s endeavour but felt a touch of naivety led to them suffering only their second home league defeat of the season.

He said: “It was a horrible, horrible game for many reasons.

“I knew what to expect coming into the game. Northampton are very direct but I’ll certainly never criticise anybody’s style of play because there are a million ways to skin a cat.

“My over-riding emotions are disappointment in the result but really pleased with the effort and commitment from the players, there’s no doubt they’ll run through brick walls, that’s all we can ask from them.

“We just need to be cleverer and better at our decision-making and looking at what we’re going to do to other teams. We didn’t really hurt them or get them playing towards their own goal.

“We reacted really well to going a goal behind but I’m wondering why it takes us conceding a goal to react like that, that’s good to see but equally it makes me angry to see that. It’s frustrating.”
