John Askey felt Salford equaliser should have been ruled out as Port Vale held

John Askey hit out at referee Neil Hair after his Port Vale side were held to a 1-1 draw by Salford City.

Vale took a 54th-minute lead when Salford’s Cameron Burgess put the ball into his own net, before substitute Tom Elliott salvaged a point for the visitors when he headed in at the near post after meeting Richie Towell’s cross.

But manager Askey said Vale goalkeeper Scott Brown was fouled in the build up to the equaliser.

He said: “Any contact on the keeper is usually a foul, but the referee didn’t give it, which I am disappointed with.

“I thought in the first half we were definitely the better team, but the second half was a bit scrappy.

“Once we had scored they put us under a little bit of pressure, which I thought they would ride out.

“I am just disappointed with the goal they scored.

“The ball shouldn’t have come in, in the first place so I was disappointed with that.

“When it did, their player made contact with Browny before he has headed it.

“Normally the referee would give a foul, but today he hasn’t.

“I thought the players dealt with with the windy conditions really well.

“I don’t think you can perhaps appreciate in the stands how bad it was.

“The wind was swirling so sometimes the passes went astray but, having said that, I thought we played some really good football at times.”

Vale nearly went in front when a goalmouth scramble saw Richie Bennett divert the ball toward the net, but Salford goalkeeper Kyle Letheren somehow kept it out.

The home side went close again minutes into the second-half when David Amoo stormed his way through the visitors’ defence, only to launch his effort straight at the Salford stopper.

Vale broke the deadlock when Mitch Clark, on loan from Leicester City, burst into the box and sent the ball in, only for Australian defender Burgess to put it past Letheren.

However, Salford clinched a point when Elliott, who joined from Millwall in the January transfer window, headed in in fellow sub Towell’s cross, 10 minutes after replacing Brandon Asante.

Salford manager Graham Alexander said: “Vale have one of the best home records in the league, so I don’t see this result as two points dropped.

“Their goal was an unfortunate one from our perspective as it was a cross-shot which was difficult to defend, but the response of the team was excellent.

“The game could have gone either way, although I am a little frustrated because we didn’t have too many clear cut opportunities.

“It is about about doing the basics well and having the quality in the final third, which we showed to get the equaliser.

“With Tom (Elliott), what he brings to the team is clear for everyone to see and we are trying to get him up to speed physically.

“Sometimes you have to change the dynamic and give the opposition something to think about, which is what we did with Tom and Richie (Towell).

“It was a fantastic ball from Richie and some header from Tom for the equaliser, which I thought we deserved.”
