John Askey disappointed with dismissals against Forest Green

Port Vale boss John Askey pointed the finger of blame at referee Trevor Kettle after his side were reduced to nine men.

Vale were pushed to the wire after Forest Green staged a monumental second-half response.

Mark Cooper’s side looked dead and buried as Vale led 3-0 with three minutes to go until two late red cards put the game on ice with Forest Green captain Carl Winchester pulling a goal back from the penalty spot after 77 minutes and then planting a header home in the fifth minute of added time.

Kettle dismissed Mitchell Clark, shown a straight red for Vale when sliding in on Liam Kitching with three minutes to go and two-goal Tom Pope joined him in the sixth minute of stoppage time for catching Ebou Adams.

Askey said: “I’m knackered! We made hard work of it in the end.

“It’s great that we won, but I’m disappointed to have had two players sent off. To get three points is fantastic from the players – I can’t knock them.

“That’s the referee’s ninth red card this season which says it all.

“We’ve got 13 games to go and every one is going to be like a cup final.”

Despite their rally, Rovers fell to their fifth consecutive home loss.

Disappointed Rovers boss Mark Cooper said:  “We started well, but every time the opposition come into our penalty area at the moment they score.

“The first time Port Vale put the ball into our box, they score with a free shot and that sucks the life out of you.

“When you look at the table you would say we’re play-off contenders, but we have to be better at both ends of the pitch.

“It’s now about being professional and taking responsibility.

“I can’t label a lack of effort or commitment, it’s just that people have to do their jobs.

“It’s easy to sulk when you’re losing games, but I want the players to stand up and be counted.”
