Fleetwood’S terrific run continued as they deservedly hung on to edge out Portsmouth 1-0.
The hosts’ fifth straight victory helped them leapfrog Pompey in the table and back into the League One play-off places.
The hosts struck in the 12th minute when Danny Andrew drilled in a deflected cross which popped up perfectly for Callum Connolly to head home from close range.
The lead ought to have been swiftly doubled, but Wes Burns dragged an angled effort wide with only goalkeeper Alex Bass to beat.
Pompey almost evened it up soon after when Ronan Curtis’ free-kick from the tightest of angles swirled in and struck the crossbar.
Seven minutes before the interval Fleetwood’s leading scorer Paddy Madden fired in a 20-yard drive which Bass saved comfortably.
Madden tested Bass again on the hour mark after playing a smart one-two with Andrew, while at the other end Sean Raggett’s effort was headed off the line by Lewie Coyle.
Substitute Josh Morris twice went close to adding a second for Fleetwood late on.
