Adebayo Akinfenwa equals Wycombe’s league scoring record in Tranmere victory

Adebayo Akinfenwa equalled Wycombe’s Football League goalscoring record during his side’s 3-1 Sky Bet League One victory over Tranmere.

Relegation-threatened Rovers looked set for a share of the spoils when James Vaughan cancelled out Anthony Stewart’s opener.

But Akinfenwa headed home his 53rd goal for the club to tie the Chairboys’ EFL goalscoring record with Nathan Tyson.

And the promotion-chasers made the game safe when Joe Jacobson scored from the penalty spot in stoppage-time after Alex Samuel was wiped out by goalkeeper Scott Davies.

Stewart put Wanderers ahead after he bundled home from a corner to end an uneventful first half.

Scott Davies kept out Paul Smyth after 55 minutes, before Akinfenwa hit the crossbar with a header three minutes later.

Vaughan slotted home with the aid of the post to level matters after 63 minutes.

Davies made a brilliant save to keep out Stewart as Wanderers looked for a quick response.

But there was nothing he could do to stop Wycombe taking charge when Akinfenwa headed home Fred Onyedinma’s cross after 71 minutes before Jacobson made sure of the result in the dying seconds.
