John McGreal relieved to see Colchester end winless run

John McGreal saluted his Colchester side after they recorded a first win in three with a 2-1 victory against Salford at a rain-soaked Peninsula Stadium.

Kwame Poku and Callum Harriott struck in the first half for the U’s, who remain in the play-off places, with Ashley Hunter pulling a goal back for Salford minutes before half-time.

Colchester manager McGreal said: “It was a brilliant three points for us and just what we needed.

“We’d had a great week’s training and the boys got their heads down, and worked hard.

“We were in a positive position in the table last week and we have improved on that with this win.

“Both our goals were outstanding and playing two up front worked well for us today.

“Kwame did ever so well, linking up with Ben Stevenson, and then Callum, who runs like the wind, dropped into a lovely little pocket of space and delivered a great finish.

“We looked for character and we had it against a team which has just reached a Wembley final, so the ground was bouncing.

“Salford threw everything at us and we had to contend with a gale-force wind, hail and rain, so credit to our fans, too, who made the journey up and gave us that extra step that we needed.”

Salford boss Graham Alexander added: “We have conceded from little opportunities given to the opposition, but we have to look at ourselves and how we have conceded them.

“They were poor goals for us to concede, considering where on the pitch Colchester picked the ball  up from.

“We had number of chances, but we just didn’t take them.

“It’s deja vu for us at home – we aren’t taking the points we deserve from our performances.

“I think we deserved to get the goal just before half-time.

“In the second half, I can’t think of a chance they had, but we just couldn’t find that elusive second goal.

“I have to give my players credit – especially for how they played in the second half.

“We still have a lot of games to play and there are a lot of games for us to win.”
