Wellens delighted to see Swindon pick up pace in second half

Swindon manager Richie Wellens praised his side’s second-half performance after the League Two leaders beat Grimsby 3-1.

Jerry Yates set Swindon on their way before an effort from Diallang Jaiyesimi and a Luke Hendrie own goal saw them 3-0 ahead 12 minutes after the break before James Hanson pulled one back from Grimsby.

Wellens said: “We complicated the game in the first half far too much, there were opportunities to slip people in, get in behind them and create more chances.

“We simplified the game in the second half, moved the ball quicker and caused more problems.

“The first goal is brilliant skill by Diallang Jaiyesimi and it’s a brilliant, unselfish pull back from Eoin Doyle.

“The second is a great header from Jaiyesimi and we told Lloyd Isgrove at half-time that we weren’t getting enough crosses from him.

“He put it in the right area and it’s unfortunate for the lad who’s put it in his own net.

“The first half was a bit drab, in the second half we woke up.

“With the wind we’ve just got to play in the right areas, we’re not passing out from the back as risky as we sometimes do, we’re just trying to play in the opposition’s half a lot more.

“If we get the ball into the final third into good position in the final third it takes the wind out of it.

“I think we need to get the front three even more involved, that’s the secret to the good results in the wind.”

Swindon took the lead two minutes after half-time courtesy of a tap-in from Yates.

In the 49th minute it was 2-0 when Diallang Jaiyesimi’s header came back off the far post and hit Grimsby goalkeeper James McKeown and dropped into the net.

Hendrie kneed into his own net on 57 minutes after Lloyd Isgrove’s cross evaded Luke Waterfall but rebounded off Hendrie and in to end the contest following three goals in 12 minutes for the league leaders.

Hanson nodded in a corner in the 59th minute to give the Mariners feint hope of a remarkable comeback, but Swindon saw the game out.

Grimsby boss Ian Holloway said: “I think it is a step forward for us, We lost 3-0 at home, now we have lost 3-1 away but this was a much closer and much better performance from us.

“I think they deserve the three points. We have to believe in ourselves a lot more than we did after that goal went in.

“They believe in what they are doing more than we do and we have to get over that. We have got some really talented players and we have to impose our style on them.

“I was really looking forward to the second half and all of a sudden it went horribly wrong.

“We needed another goal but we did not really earn it.

“We had a very, very good first half. It was an appalling start to the second half and that has given us a mountain to climb.

“But well done to them if anyone finishes above them the will have done really well. Our run is bust now, that is six points they have taken off us. But i have more than enough experience to be very realistic about where we started and where we are trying to go at this club.”
