Alexander hails Salford’s positive approach in win over Macclesfield

Salford boss Graham Alexander felt his players showed their battling qualities in coping better with the tricky conditions in their 2-0 win at Macclesfield.
The visitors sealed victory with two goals in seven first-half minutes at Moss Rose and the manager said their training-ground work helped them immensely.
“We played well on a difficult pitch in difficult conditions,” he said.
“We were prepared for it and we tried to play some good stuff at times. We trusted each other with the ball, worked hard off the ball and scored two very good goals so I’m really pleased.
“It’s difficult to come here and score goals and to win, their record shows that, but the players were excellent today.
“We coped with the pitch because we train on something similar every single day, it’s no problem – we trained on what was basically a swimming pool yesterday. It was full of mud and we knew that was what it was going to be like here.
“We still needed to pass the ball, have trust in each other and do the things that win you games.
“We attacked with a positive attitude and knew that we’d make mistakes but we kept playing and kept getting on the ball.”
Ash Hunter’s wind-assisted cross that sailed into the top corner and Richie Towell’s neat second goal made it eight games without a win for Macc, who sit uncomfortably above League Two’s only relegation place.
And Silkmen boss Mark Kennedy was forced to concede his team had been second best as their winless run stretched to eight games.
“Obviously we’re really disappointed to lose,” he said. “I thought we started really well, we were on the front foot, we did really well in the conditions and in the elements, so I was happy with how we started the game.
“But ultimately when we did get into good areas we didn’t really hurt Salford.
“We had some control of the game but it’s a little bit of a sob story in terms of the first goal. In all honesty their lad’s cut in and put in what was potentially a good cross but it’s ended up going in the top corner of the goal.
“That one was unfortunate but the second was a poor goal from our point of view, a really soft one.
“Unfortunately after that, with the strength of Salford, with who they are it was always going to be difficult.
“My biggest disappointment is the second half, I actually fancied us going downhill and with the wind but it just fizzled out.”
