Swindon boss Wellens frustrated despite win over Scunthorpe

Swindon manager Richie Wellens was dissatisfied despite seeing Eoin Doyle’s double fire the League Two leaders to a 2-0 win at home to lowly Scunthorpe.

Doyle struck in either half to take his tally for the season to 25 goals as sluggish Swindon cemented their position at the summit.

Wellens said: “It is a good result but a poor performance on the whole.

“I thought in patches of the second half we played well but I have to give credit to them, they were very well organised, they were difficult to play through.

“We kept trying to go through the middle but there were too many turnovers but we kept going and it was two very good finishes from Eoin Doyle.

“We tired them out with passages of play and quick interchanges around the box, but overall they came here and made it difficult for us, the gaps were quite small and difficult to play through.

“Three crosses in the first half is nowhere near good enough, we lacked fluency today, we have played once in two weeks, maybe that had something to do with it.

“I thought they were a threat until the very end. It was not quite our game tonight.”

Swindon looked rusty after not playing for 10 days due to postponements but took the lead four minutes before half-time thanks to Doyle’s close-range header from Diallang Jaiyesimi’s cross.

Doyle sealed the points in the 77th minute when Doyle latched onto Michael Doughty’s pinpoint through ball and dinked his shot over Rory Watson to put the hosts out of sight.

Apart from that, there was barely any goalmouth action and home goalkeeper Steven Benda had a quiet night.

Paul Caddis struck the bar with a free-kick in the first half for Swindon.

Scunthorpe manager Russ Wilcox said: “We were nowhere near disgraced and I thought we were outstanding against the top team in the league.

“We frustrated them and looked half decent on the counter attack.

“People at home might be thinking ‘hang on you lost 2-0’, but we had 11 under-23s on the pitch and there were some good performances from them.

“We’re building for next season now. We have a game against Grimsby at the weekend which we want to win for the fans, but then these kids will be the foundation for next season.

“The difference between the teams was Doyle. He’s outstanding and he’s the guy who finishes things off. I don’t think he had that many chances, but he knows how to score and he’s done it all his career.

“I thought we had some really good spells in the second half and we maybe could’ve had a penalty on another day.”
