Matt Godden on target as Coventry beat Ipswich to pull clear at top

A goal in the first half from Matt Godden took Coventry five points clear at the top of League One with a 1-0 win which struck another blow to opponents Ipswich’s fading hopes of a play-off place.

It was the sixth defeat in eight league games for Town while the visitors extended their unbeaten run to 14 games.

There were appeals for an Ipswich penalty when Jon Nolan went over in the box but referee Trevor Kettle waved play on and the Sky Blues went ahead in the 16th minute with a brilliantly executed goal.

Fankaty Dabo and Liam Walsh combined and the latter’s pinpoint pass found Godden, who calmly slotted his 15th goal of the season past Ipswich keeper Will Norris.

Nolan had a golden chance to draw the sides level when he was put through by Alan Judge with just City keeper Marko Marosi to beat but headed the bouncing ball straight at him.

Freddie Sears’ low, angled shot inside the box was easily gathered by Marosi and Coventry should have extended their lead five minutes into the second half when a cross from Dabo found Godden, whose half-volley went over the bar.
