Stockport move into play-off places with Maidenhead win

Stockport climbed into the Vanarama National League play-off places after fighting back from a half-time deficit to defeat Maidenhead 2-1 at York Road.

Maidenhead could have moved out of the bottom four with victory in a match which went ahead amid the coronavirus outbreak, and they took a 27th-minute lead through Ody Alfa.

But Stockport hit back after the break to claim the points, defender Ash Palmer netting once again to draw the teams level before substitute Liam McAlinden struck a fine 76th-minute winner.

Stockport had the better of the early chances with Connor Dimaio’s free-kick bringing a fine save from Taye Ashby-Hammond. Then, from the following corner, new County signing Richie Bennett saw his effort cleared off the line.

However, it was Maidenhead – looking for their first points in five games – who took the lead, with Alfa volleying past Ben Hinchliffe following good work by Dylan Asonganyi on his first appearance for the Magpies.

United almost doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half through Danny Whitehall, but he was denied by Hinchliffe and moments later it was 1-1.

Paul Turnbull’s ball in picked out Palmer and the centre-back headed home for his third goal in three games.

Both teams pushed for a winner and it was County who got it when McAlinden, a half-time replacement for Dimaio, fired home from outside the box, helping Stockport move up a place to seventh.
