Bernardo Silva: Man City stars overlooked for personal awards

Man City dominate

The last couple of campaigns have seen Pep Guardiola and co. dominate the English game.

After a fairly average start to life in England, the former Barcelona boss certainly found his feet in the 2017/18 season.

Manchester City would rack up a record-breaking 100 points in the Premier League that term, scoring 106 goals in 38 ties, and finishing the season a staggering 19 points clear of 2nd placed Manchester United.

City also clinched the League Cup in said season.

The Sky Blues' dominance over English football then continued into the 2018/19 campaign, when Man City garnered 98 points in the Premier League, the second-highest points total in history behind only their century from the previous season.

The Citizens also became the first male English side to complete the domestic treble, as they saw off Chelsea and Watford respectively to add further League Cup and FA Cup titles to their ever-growing trophy cabinet.

Man City miss out on awards

But despite Man City's clear dominance over the Premier League in the past two seasons, their players have been somewhat overlooked for individual awards.

The 2017/18 campaign was a great example of this. City tore the league apart, with Kevin De Bruyne, among others, in sensational form throughout.

However, it would be Liverpool's Mohamed Salah who took home the Player of the Season award.

And now, in a recent interview, Man City's Bernardo Silva has opened up on how he feels the Sky Blues' players are sometimes overlooked for awards, especially when compared to Liverpool's stars:

"Three seasons ago, we won the league, [Liverpool] were 30 points behind and Kevin De Bruyne had an unbelievable season. Mo Salah scores a lot of goals – he's a great player, I admire him a lot, I'm not saying otherwise – but they gave the award to Salah and not De Bruyne.

"The season after, it's very tight. Raheem Sterling was on the run with Van Dijk. [It was] very tight but they gave it to Van Dijk.

"This [campaign], again, De Bruyne is having another unbelievable season. We're behind… But because Liverpool are champions, probably one of them will win the award again.

"David Silva, Kun Aguero never won the PFA Player of the Year. I think the individual awards are very relative and it's important, but it's not that important. People should stop thinking about that too much in my opinion.

"I don't want this to be polemic. I talked about Liverpool players, but I admire their team, I admire their players – it's nothing to do with them, it's just a small example."
