Arsene Wenger has praised Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after a stellar season in the Premier League.

Arsene Wenger insists Liverpool will always be recognised as Premier League champions even if the season gets cancelled. The campaign has been suspended for two months now due to the coronavirus outbreak and officials have yet to decide on a restart date as the UK is still in lockdown.

After the Dutch Eredivisie and French Ligue 1 were voided fears heightened of a potential axe of the Premier League that would deny the Reds of their first title in 30 years.

That would be a major blow for the Merseysiders who lead the league 25 points clear of second-placed Manchester City and are only two wins away from clinching the gold.

But Arsenal legend Wenger insists that Jurgen Klopp's men will forever be remembered as the legitimate champions even if the season is called off.

He told talkSPORT: "Jurgen has done extremely well because that club has waited 30 years for this title.

"And when you think they have such a massive difference [points gap] to the second team, Manchester City, as well – 25 points, it’s absolutely massive.

"No matter what England will decide, Liverpool are champions in everyone’s head, I think."

Premier League officials may share an update next week after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces the government's strategy on Sunday.

Many suggestions have been made mainly by a number of famous former footballers, such as Shaun Wright-Phillips who thinks the season has to be called off and Liverpool should be given a 15-point lead next term.

Wright-Phillips said recently: "I would just null and void the season. Liverpool deserve to win the title but then if you give them the title, then you have to give them a bonus and where’s the Premier League making their money from now?

"Then if you give them the title, realistically you have to relegate the three teams. There are like three or four points between them down at the bottom, so then there’ll be an argument on that side.

"And then if you do that, then you’ve got to decide who’s getting promoted and who wins the play-offs without even going into it.

"So I think it’s a little bit more difficult than just giving Liverpool the title. I would just null and void it, even if they then gave Liverpool a 10/15 point headstart next year."

Liverpool have won 27 out of 29 Premier League matches this season and only lost once to Watford at Vicarage Road.
