You've Been Saying Bruno Fernandes' Name Wrong All This Time

Bruno Fernandes has been the name on everyone's lips after a stunning start to his Manchester United career, but we're here to tell you you've probably been saying his surname wrong.

On the face of it, 'Fernandes' would appear to sound as it looks but as per the Portugal midfielder himself, it's not the case.

During a feature with BT Sport where he picked his 'Perfect Player', Fernandes revealed the correct pronunciation of his name is "Fur-nandsh" when doing his introduction.

FIFA players will be familiar with commentator Derek Rae doing that exact pronunciation and as annoying as it is to listen to, he was absolutely right and we ought to get onboard with it quickly.

It's not the first time a United player has come out to reveal his name has been pronounced wrong all along.

Fernandes' midfield partner Fred has one of the most simple names to say, or so you would think.

In a video shared to United's official Twitter account, the former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder revealed the real pronunciation of his name upon signing for the club.

In a short clip it sounds more like "Frej", or even "Fredge" as opposed to it sounding like Daphne's other half in Scooby Doo.

It's a topic that was discussed by South American football expert Tim Vickery when the Brazilian arrived in a £50 million summer move in 2018.

He said in his Radio Times column that English-speaking folk have been pronouncing many South American names incorrectly for years, with other high-profile examples include Chelsea's Willian and Real Madrid's Marcelo.
