Chelsea need to raise funds to make further additions in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard will have learnt a lot about his team in the 4-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

The Blues boss will have been pragmatic enough to know the match at the Allianz Arena was effectively a dead rubber after suffering a 3-0 defeat in the first leg at Stamford Bridge back in February.

An injury crisis added to Lampard's woes heading into the clash but the combined factors gave him a chance to check out some of his fringe men.

Chelsea are considering selling a number of players to fund their exciting summer transfer plans, which include a deal for Kai Havertz plus a new left-back, centre-back and goalkeeper.

Crucially, a couple of players in the danger zone did not pass the test against Bayern Munich.

Emerson Palmieri failed to keep the defensive line for the hosts' opening goal as Robert Lewandowski was brought down by Willy Caballero when clean through on goal.

The 26-year-old was also out of position for Ivan Perisic's tap in which doubled the Bundesliga champions' lead on the night.

Chelsea are eager to sign Ben Chilwell from Leicester City, while Real Madrid rising star Sergio Reguilon has emerged as an alternative.

Quite simply, Lampard will have been left in no doubt that he needs a new left-back.

Further forward, Ross Barkley struggled to stamp his creative mark on the game as Bayern Munich duo Thiago Alcantara and Leon Goretzka controlled proceedings.

The 26-year-old has been in and out of the team since his January 2018 switch from Everton.

The impending arrival of Kai Havertz means he is likely to fall further down the pecking order so Barkley needed to show his worth.

A second-half run through the middle that saw him brought down on the edge of the box offered a glimpse of the quality that Barkley is capable of producing. It was a shame, therefore, that he followed up by smacking the free kick straight into the wall.

If Chelsea are serious about swooping for Havertz then funds are required and Barkley is surely at risk.

It was almost mission impossible for Chelsea against one of the best teams on the planet so the performances of his players will have given Lampard food for thought.

A tough night for Chelsea could have firmed up his plans for next season's squad as a positive debut season in charge ended on a sour note.
