Sunderland are likely to be without midfielder Elliot Embleton for their Sky Bet League One opener against Bristol Rovers.
Embleton has been troubled by a thigh problem during pre-season, and manager Phil Parkinson confirmed he was back in training, but not expected to be match fit.
Forward Charlie Wyke scored twice in the midweek 8-1 EFL Trophy win over Aston Villa and could be in contention along with midfielder Josh Scowen.
Summer signings Danny Graham and Kosovo defender Arbenit Xhemajli also both featured against Villa, so will be hoping for a league debut.
Bristol Rovers manager Ben Garner also made a number of changes for their midweek EFL Trophy fixture, when academy graduate Alfie Kilgour captained the team and Jonah Ayunga scored his first goal for the club.
Goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola is back following international duty with Finland, so should return to the starting XI.
Veteran midfielder Ed Upson was suspended for the EFL Trophy fixture but will be another option having come off the bench for the Carabao Cup defeat at Ipswich.
Forward Alex Rodman, defender Tom Davies and midfielder Josh Barrett all continue their rehabilitation as they close in on full match fitness.
