Tottenham will face difficulty acquiring the services of Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard, it has been claimed. The England international has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford in recent months, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer handing him just nine starts in the league last season.

Lingard was omitted from the matchday squad for United's season opener against Crystal Palace last weekend, which they lost 3-1.

His omission from the squad sparked fresh speculation about his future at the Theatre of Dreams, which could be become very bleak if United sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

Tottenam boss Jose Mourinho is understood to be keen on offering Lingard a way out of Old Trafford.

But in order to create space for the 27-year-old, the Portuguese will reportedly have to offload midfielder Dele Alli - whose future in north London is unknown following Gareth Bale's return to the club earlier this month.

That's according to ESPN, who claim a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Lingard could be "dependent" on Spurs cashing on Alli.

They also claim Mourinho will have to fend off interest from Zenit Saint Petersburg to snap up the 24-year-old's services.

Lingard, of course, was managed by Mourinho during the Portuguese's two-and-a-half-year spell in charge of Manchester United.

And former Tottenham hitman Darren Bent reckons the charismatic Lingard should seriously consider a reunion with his old boss.

"I like Jesse, but I think he does need a change of scenery," Bent said during an appearance on talkSPORT.

"I think he needs to maybe get out of Old Trafford.

"I know that it has been his club since he was young, but I think everyone at some stage, unless things keep going well, keep going on the upward spiral, everyone needs a change of scenery, just to freshen up a little bit.

"I think Jesse is definitely one of them players that could do with a change of direction.”

Manchester United will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, travelling to the Amex Stadium to take on Brighton.

Tottenham, meanwhile, will next take to the pitch on Thursday night for their Europa League third-round qualifier against Macedonian side Shkendija.
