Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester City clash this weekend with Pep Guardiola potentially having Sergio Aguero available for the meeting at the Etihad

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is hoping that Sergio Aguero will be available to play some role against Liverpool this weekend.

The winners of the last two Premier League titles meet at the Etihad on Sunday in a crunch clash early in the season.

Aguero has missed City’s last two matches after suffering an injury against West Ham last month.

The Argentine striker will not feature Olympiacos in the Champions League though Guardiola hopes he can feature against the Reds.

Asked if Aguero could face Liverpool at the Etihad, Guardiola said: “Right now we don’t know. He’s getting better, but we don’t know.

"We don’t want him to take a step back again, but he’s getting better.

"It’s not so dangerous, like when he felt something in the last game, the West Ham game.

"So he’s getting better. I don’t know about Liverpool, but after the international break, for sure he’ll be ready.

"We're awaiting Sergio, but we’ve been happy with Ferran [Torres], so we have an alternative.”

Aguero’s fellow striker Gabriel Jesus has also spent time on the sidelines with an injury.

The Brazilian forward has been out since the ed of September though has re-joined first-team training.

On Jesus, Guardiola added: "It's too early to know. He did one training session with the team. We're happy he is back."

Despite the injury concerns, Guardiola does not plan to rest players in the Champions League ahead of the clash with Liverpool.

He said: "Absolutely not. In the Champions League, you cannot make a false step because after that we'd struggle.

"We know in the Champions League you have to secure your games at home and win at least one away.

"We did that in Marseille but now we have to be sure we can keep the points at home.

"Tomorrow we have an incredible opportunity to take a huge step toward qualifying for the next round.”
