Manchester United have made an approach to Mauricio Pochettino as they consider replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Manchester United have approached Mauricio Pochettino with a view to him replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager at Old Trafford. The former Tottenham boss is believed to be keen on the role and has been sounded out over the job.

United officials have made contact with Pochettino's representatives amid the poor run of form under Solskjaer.

The former Tottenham manager has been linked with the Old Trafford job ever since he left the club.

The Manchester Evening News claim insiders have been privately backing Solskjaer but a defeat to Everton on Saturday could see United drop to 17th in the table.

That could force a decision with Pochettino available and interested in taking the job.

United have lost three of their six Premier League matches this season and any ideas of challenging Liverpool for the title have been extinguished.

The 2-1 defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League last night following the loss to Arsenal last weekend has put mounting pressure on Solskjaer.

When asked about his future in his post-match press conference he explained: "I decline to comment on this. Of course it's early on and opinions are out there all the time.

"I'm employed by the club to do a job - and I do that to the best of my ability with our staff."

Pochettino appeared on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football earlier this week and opened up on his return to management.

He said: "I am always ready to go again and be involved in the game.

"It's not stress when you are working, it's not stress going into the training round to prepare the match and to compete.

"I hope to go back soon so we can start again to work. I am looking forward to being back in the game. I love this game but it's difficult, we are inside and working on doing things. That's the reality."

United would not need to pay Pochettino any compensation as that clause expired back in May.

The Red Devils have made several managerial changes since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have all come and gone and Solskjaer could be next.

United return to Premier League action against Everton on Saturday (12.30pm) and the Norwegian will know the result could go a long way to deciding his future.

An approach for Pochettino indicates the Red Devils are seriously considering an early-season change.
