David Alaba is a free agent at the end of the season with interest from a host of clubs around Europe.

Liverpool have made their move to beat Real Madrid to the signing of David Alaba this summer with a lucrative contract offer, according to reports. Bayern Munich had previously been confident of keeping Alaba at the club heading into last summer.

The Austria international has been a key part of their success over the past decade, winning a host of trophies along the way.

Alaba has repeatedly stated his preference to stay at the Allianz Arena, but negotiations over a new deal reached an impasse earlier this season.

And the German giants withdrew their offer of a new five-year contract back in November, opening the door to a move away from Bayern.

Real Madrid and Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move to sign the 28-year-old, who is free to speak with prospective new clubs from this month.

And it appears as though Liverpool have made their move early to try and entice Alaba to Anfield.

According to Italian journalist Romero Agresti, Liverpool have offered Alaba a contract worth £9million-a-year for him to join as a free agent in the summer.

That would place him immediately as one of the best paid players at Liverpool on £175,000-a-week.

Only Mohamed Salah, Thiago Alcantara, Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk reportedly earn more, according to Spotrac.

Bayern could look at cashing in this month to avoid losing Alaba for free in the summer.

But it's been reported that they want to keep him until the end of the season as they battle to retain their European and domestic titles.

Alaba is regarded as one of the best central defenders in the world and has proven his versatility over the years.

He spent most of the early stages of his career playing left back before being switched to a central role in 2019.

And Alaba would slot straight into Liverpool's team with Klopp failing to replace Dejan Lovren last summer.

Fabinho is currently the only senior centre-back available to Klopp currently with Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk out injured.

Matip is expected to return at the end of the month, but both Gomez and Van Dijk face length spells on the treatment table.

Liverpool's injury crisis has led to calls for the club to bring in central defensive cover this month.

But reports have suggested that transfer chief Michael Edwards is focussing more on deals for the summer.
