Jorge Mendes has done his fair share of work to improve the fortunes of Manchester United in the past, not least after being summoned by Sporting to broker the deal that saw Bruno Fernandes move to Old Trafford. Now it could be time for the super-agent and United to cross paths again, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bids to topple neighbours Manchester City.

Mendes' relationship with United in the past has been a tale of appreciation and also woe.

He is the man who brought Cristiano Ronaldo to the club, before helping him secure his world-record move to Real Madrid in 2009.

David de Gea is also represented by Mendes, while Anthony Martial has worked with the Portuguese in the past.

There had been some suggestion that Mendes' relationship with United could deteriorate following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December 2018.

However, his fingerprints could well be all over one potential summer signing that is reportedly being lined up by the club.

Sky Germany report that United have been watching Eintracht Frankfurt striker Andre Silva closely this season and there's every chance they like what they see.

The 25-year-old has 18 goals to his name in 20 Bundesliga appearances this season. Only Robert Lewandowski (26) has more.

Silva has always had world-class promise but for one reason or another, things have not worked out at AC Milan or Sevilla.

There was even some suggestion that Mendes could bring Silva to Wolves, as part of Nuno Espirito Santo's Portuguese revolution but now the frontman has put himself firmly in the shop window.

Signing a new No 9 could be on United's to-do list next summer as well but first they will have to make a decision on Edinson Cavani.

The club have the option to extend his contract by a further year and there's every chance that could happen.

But even with Cavani, United are in need of another striker with Martial and Marcus Rashford, now favoured from the wing once again.

Silva could prove to be the perfect partner in crime for Fernandes, who has had to do it all alone at times this season.

Ultimately, besides their inconsistent defence, United's reliance on the attacking midfielder is one of the reasons why they will fall short this season.

Solskjaer needs another source of goals and in Silva, United would be guaranteeing exactly that.

He already has natural chemistry with Fernandes from their time together with the Portugal national team.

The Frankfurt frontman has scored goals wherever he has played, including 16 in 37 outings for his country.

Having only signed him for around £7million, Frankfurt are likely to welcome making major profit on Silva, who is valued at around £30m.

Solskjaer's frontline would be set for years with Silva at the tip of the attack with him, Fernandes, Martial, Rashford and Mason Greenwood all under the age of 26.
