Frank Lampard is reportedly in the running to replace Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace this summer, just under four months since he was sacked as Chelsea head coach

Frank Lampard is a leading contender to replace Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace this summer, according to reports.

Lampard has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea at the end of January, when an underwhelming run of one win in five Premier League matches cost him his dream job at Stamford Bridge.

Since his departure, the Blues have gone from strength to strength under replacement Thomas Tuchel, who has guided them back into the top four while reaching Champions League and FA Cup finals.

Tuchel's success must be a bitter pill for Lampard to swallow, but The Telegraph claim he could be offered a return to management by Palace this summer.

The 42-year-old is said to be one of the top candidates to replace Hodgson, 73, at Selhurst Park should Eagles chiefs decide a change is needed at the end of the season.

And given they currently find themselves down in 13th place, having won just 11 league matches all season, the Palace hierarchy may well be tempted to freshen things up.

Lampard is reportedly keen to take another job in the Premier League despite his affection for ex-employers Chelsea, whom he managed for the best part of 18 months.

He had no interest in taking the England Under-21 reins following Aidy Boothroyd's departure last month, and it remains to be seen whether an approach from Palace tickles his fancy.

That could be enough to tempt Lampard to venture back into the English top flight just under nine miles south of Stamford Bridge.

The former England midfielder will likely need assurances from Palace officials that he would receive enough backing to guide them into the top half of the table for the first time since 2015, especially given they currently have 11 players out of contract this summer.

But it appears Lampard, who guided Chelsea to a top-four finish and the FA Cup final amidst challenging circumstances in his debut season at the club, is Palace's top managerial target should Hodgson depart upon the expiry of his contract.
