Former world number one Jelena Jankovic breezed into the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships on Monday, beating Petra Cetkovska 6-2 6-2.

Maria Kirilenko was the first women to progress to the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships on Monday.

The 25-year-old Russian defeated Romania's Monica Niculescu 6-3 6-0.

Kirilenko displayed impressive grit, coming back from an early break during a windy first set before sealing a second round round tie with either Francesca Schiavone or Ana Ivanovic.

Play continued on centre court as Flavia Pennetta took on Anabel Medina Garrigues.

The pair are only separated by two places in the world rankings, but there was a noticeable gulf in class between the two in the match as Penetta dominated from the start.

The Italian clinched the first set 6-3 with an emphatic forehand winner.

Spaniard Medina Garrigues, had no answer in the second, as Penetta wrapped up a 6-3 6-3 victory.

Should she make it all the way to Saturday's final, Pennetta would play for the Dubai title on her 30th birthday.

Firstly, she will have to play Jelena Jankovic who was in convincing form against Petra Cetkovska.

The Serbian took the first set 6-2 and continued to dominate in the second set, displaying impressive speed to deny her Czech opponent a way back into the match.

Jankovic's second ace of the night secured a 6-2 6-2 victory as she aims to win her first title since March 2010.

Julia Goerges is also through to the second round after a mixed performance against Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The German was outclassed in the first set of her tournament debut as Kuznetsova wrapped it up 6-2.

But Goerges fought back to claim the second set tie-break before her Russian opponent's unforced error handed Goerges a tough second round tie with world number one Victoria Azarenka.
