French champions Lille were looking to close the gap on second-place Paris Saint Germain when they travelled to Rennes on Sunday night.

Rudi Garcia's men had won their last two and were handed the advantage when Onyekachi Apam picked up his second yellow card for this foul on Joe Cole.

From the resulting free kick Benoit Pedretti managed to pick out Aurelien Chedjou, the centre-half directing his header beyond Benoit Costil five minutes before half-time.

Despite Lille's numerical advantage it was Rennes who came closest to getting the second goal of the match, Vincent Pajot shooting wide when he should have scored.

With time running out Rennes got the goal their hard work deserved, a long ball into the box finding Mevlut Erding, the striker equalising with a deft finish.

The result leaves Lille seven points behind league leaders Montpellier, while Rennes drop to sixth.
