Bundesliga wrap: Munich snatch second from Monchengladbach

  • Intro:

Bayern Munich took full advantage of Borussia Monchengladbach's slip on Friday to snatch second spot in Bundesliga 1.

Two goals from Franck Ribery gave Jupp Heynckes' men a two-nil victory at home to Schalke on Sunday.

On Friday, 'Gladbach were held 1-all at home by Hamburg.

Borussia Dortmund are now four points clear at the top after their 3-1 win over Hanover 96.

    Script:

Borussia Moenchengladbach's fans were out in force on Friday as they got off to a fine start against SV Hamburg at Borussia-Park.

Almost a goal there from Juan Arango flashing a shot wide.

But he soon had another chance, whipping in the free kick for Mike Hanke to score in the 45th minute.

Trailing, Hamburg had to change their tactics after the break.

Tolgay Arslan shot over from close range after the break.

But he made up for that in the 56th minute when he rifled the ball in for his first ever Bundesliga goal.

Hamburg became increasingly confident, forcing 'Gladbach to dig deep.

In the end, the home side will have been happy with the 1-1 result.

As will Hamburg, who move up to eighth in the table.

Bayern were able to take full advantage of the 'foals'' slip.

Jupp Heynckes' men were desperate for a win after their Champions League loss on Wednesday.

Timo Hildebrand stood between them and an early lead, the former Germany number one making quick-fire saves from Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben.

But the Schalke goalkeeper was caught out in the 31st minute when Franck Ribery latched onto Luiz Gustavo's pass.

Holger Badstuber nearly made it two - twice.

Early in the second half, dreams dashed once again as the ball hit the crossbar.

But not to worry as Ribery doubled his side's advantage in the 55th minute.

2-0 at the whistle, Schalke stay fourth, whilst Bayern left four points happier.
