  • Intro:

England midfielder James Milner hopes the side can pick up a win for caretaker manager Stuart Pearce when they host the Netherlands in an international friendly at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night.

Pearce stepped into the role after the sudden exit of former manager Fabio Capello, but the England under-21 manager will be without strikers Wayne Rooney and Darren Bent.

"Watching as many games as we do and seeing them in the Premier League, I think they've both been playing really well this season, for top teams as well. Sometimes it's not that easy coming in as younger players into those sides, but it shows how much confidence they've got to go and.... sometimes they've been playing up top on their own and Studge (Sturridge) has maybe been playing a bit wider, but Welbs (Welbeck) especially, I think you've seen in his England appearances as well, at times he's been up there on his own and he holds it up so well and bring(s) other players into the game, but he can also create things out of nothing as well and Studge (is) the same I think. He's a livewire. He creates a lot of chances and scores goals as well. That's obviously the most important thing, but both of them have great ability and as you say, with the three young strikers, that's what you want, young players coming through and staking a claim to be in the team."

(Talking about England caretaker manager Stuart Pearce)

"Yes, I think it's a good thing. A lot of the boys have worked with him before. Like you say, the younger players coming through and worked with him at under-21 level and a few of the boys at club level as well and you go into games very well prepared. It's obviously great having someone whose played at the highest level, like he has for England, and the passion he played with and the player he was. Already today, we've worked - the players who trained - on what he wants to work on going into the game on Wednesday. So, we've worked on that in training and hopefully can take that into the game on Wednesday. And, like I say, to have someone like that, and the way he represented his country and working with him at under-21 level, he's done such a good job there. You see the record the under-21s have had since he's been there, it's fantastic. So, hopefully we can get a good result on Wednesday for him."

(Talking about the friendly against the Netherlands)

"Like you say, we've got a big tournament coming up in the summer. Like you say, there's not too many games before that, so it's a good test for us against the Dutch. They have a strong squad, so a game we're all looking forward to. Big game, big test, but I'm confident that we will get a result."

    SUPERCAPTION: Stewart Downing, England midfielder

    (Asked about England's managerial vacancy)

"You know, whoever the manager is, we're all behind him 100 per cent. Us as players just have to keep focused and focus on the games ahead. There's a big tournament coming up. I think it would be easy to say, 'well, we don't know who the manager's going to be, we don't know this and that.' I think it's an easy excuse. I think we just keep the job in mind."
