Di Matteo ready for Chelsea challenge

Saturday, March 10 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Former player Roberto di Matteo takes charge of Chelsea in the English Premier League for the first time on Saturday when the 'Blues' welcome Stoke city to Stamford Bridge.

Italian di Matteo took over the managerial reigns on a caretaker basis at the start of the week following the sacking of Portuguese Andre-Villas Boas, who endured a poor run of results that culminated with last week's 1-0 league defeat away to West Bromwich Albion.

(asked if he had spoken privately to Chelsea's senior players to get the squad on his side) "I feel I have everybody on side. I have spoken individually to almost all of them now, over these five days, because I believed this is a team effort, and it's a team sport for sure and we need everybody to be able to pull in the right, or in the same direction and I've spoken to the guys that you've mentioned, but I've also spoken to all the other players too."

(asked if he hopes to become Chelsea's full-time manager) There's a lot of speculation and it's not for me to comment on what's going to happen in the future. I have to win a game tomorrow against Stoke City and the club will make the appropriate decisions when the time is right for the club and for this club and.... for me it's very simple. I know what my task is tomorrow. After tomorrow I focus on the next one. For now, I've.... quite enough on my plate to think about it for tomorrow."

(asked about captain John Terry's possible return from injury) "Well, it's great for the team.... if 'JT's' (John Terry) available because he's our leader and, you know, skipper and he's a very important player and I think going forward with these important games that are coming up, I am very pleased that I have everybody available. You know, I think it's only the second time in the season that everybody's fit, you know, we've been training with the whole squad. So, that's great news."
