Of the five Palestinian athletes who have qualified for the London 2012 Olympics, judoka competitor Maher Abu Ramila is the standout athlete.

Whilst his compatriots have all been handed berths as a 'gesture' by the IOC, Ramila qualified for the games on merit, after beating several judo champions.

The father-of-two impressed at the World Judo Championships in Tokyo in 2010, narrowly losing in the second round.

That successful performance won him a place in the London games.

SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Maher Abu Ramila, Palestinian judoka:

"It's a huge dream which came true, like any player that wishes to reach the Olympics. I hope I will be a good ambassador for the state of Palestine in the Olympics and to raise the Palestinian flag like any other country in all the world forums."

Palestine's other representatives include a 400-metre runner; an 800-metre runner; and two 50-metre freestyle swimmers.
