Zenit St Petersburg began the defence of their Russian League title on Sunday the 22nd of July when they played Amkar Perm.
Domenico Criscito - went close with a shot after a mazy run into the box.

Shortly after, Zenit had their lead.

Alexander Kerzhakov - who struggled in attack for Russia during Euro 2012 - showing a beautiful touch to curl the ball around Roman Gerus and into the back of the net.

The home side doubled their advantage just after the hour mark - Sergei Semak nudged in the back by Konstantin Vassiljev and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.

Up stepped Kerzhakov, who cooly rolled the penalty kick into the back of the net - Zenit firmly in control.

Igor Denisov came mightily close to adding a third for Zenit - the midfielder seeing his shot rebound off both posts, with Konstantin Zyryanov unable to divert his follow up effort goalwards.

2-0 the final score - Zenit's defence of their Russian title firmly up and running.
