Guus Hiddink's Anzhi Makhachkala, with a team which included Samuel Eto'o and defender Christopher Samba, travelled to face FC Rostov in the Russian Premier League on Sunday.
Just before the half hour mark two Lacina Traore efforts were blocked on the line and as Rostov broke free Anzhi's Brazilian midfielder Jucilei who was shown a red card for a foul on Alexandru Gatcan - a second bookable offence.
Despite being reduced to ten men it was Anzhi who took the lead with a long-range free-kick just after the break from midfielder Rasim Tagirbekov.
Rostov striker Dmitri Kirichenko equalised from the spot on 72 minutes after a handball against former Chelsea wing-back Yuri Zhirkov in the Anzhi penalty area.
Rostov thought they had won the game on 87 minutes when substitute Jan Holenda, a new signing from Anzhi, headed in from a cross against his old club just two minutes after coming on.
But Tagirbekov equalised for Anzhi deep into stoppage time with a header of his own after former Blackburn Rovers defender Samba kept the ball in the danger zone.
Final score 2-2 - Anzhi sit fourth with four points from two games, while Rostov secure their first point of the season.
