Shakhtar Donetsk and Kryvbas Kryvy Rig were looking to continue their impressive starts to the Ukrainian Premier League season when they met at the Donbass Arena on Sunday.

Both teams entered the game with two wins from as many matches but it turned into an ill tempered affair.

Shakhtar came close to opening the scoring after five minutes when Henrikh Mkhitaryan's goal-bound header forced a fine save from Kryvbas 'keeper Artem Shtanko.

The home side were dealt a blow ten minutes later when defender Oleksandr Kucher was shown a red card for his challenge on Kryvbas's Rinar Valeyev just outside the penalty area.

Mladen Bartulovic's ensuing free kick was well saved by Shakhtar 'keeper Andriy Pyatov.

The visitors were reduced to ten men themselves five minutes after the break.

Kryvbas defender Vitaliy Lysytskyi was shown a second yellow card after he was adjudged to have brought down Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The situation became more desperate for Kryvbas in the 63rd minute when Bartulovic was sent off for a second bookable offence.

With nine players, Oleh Taran's side did their best to hold on for a draw.

But Shakhtar eventually broke the deadlock deep into injury time to take the 1-0 win.
